At Power Teachers Africa, we’ve witnessed how access to the internet can completely transform teacher training. By leveraging mobile phone technology and providing schools with reliable internet, professional development has become not only accessible but also cost-effective.

Today, our teachers are completing short, free online professional development courses from global open-source platforms like Teach2030 to Uganda-specific programs supported by Enabel.

Of course, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. At first, only a handful of teachers managed to complete courses.

But with digital literacy training led by our IT officer, Edgar Wamala, alongside small financial incentives for one completed course per term, the results have been remarkable.
By the third term of piloting our model, teachers weren’t just completing one course — many were completing multiple courses. And most importantly, using what they learn to improve their practices.

Most teachers use their own smartphones, and those without smartphones share with colleagues, while we provide the internet access that makes it all possible. This motivation-driven Power Teachers for learning model blends technology with practical incentives, placing professional development directly into the hands of teachers.
The outcome? Stronger teacher capacity and, most importantly, improved learning outcomes for children.
