The workshop was organised by the EU funded Regional Teacher Initiative in Africa (RTIA) and VVOB. Participants from Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe converged at the Fairview Hotel in Nairobi to deepen their understanding of the different interventions for teacher professional development and specifically for gender responsive pedagogy across the East

African region. The workshop offered Power Teachers Africa the opportunity to share our work as well as tap into the innovative insights by different organisations, which have promoted teacher professional growth and enriched gender responsive pedagogy in schools.

It was also an opportunity for us to grow our network of friends and allies as we seek ways to empower, motivate and support teachers to take charge of their learning in their quest to improve learning outcomes. Dr. Kamuli was particularly attracted to the abundance of quality resources for digital learning within the region, many of them vetted and approved by national

Ministries of Education. These could potentially constitute part of the menu of micro-credentialling courses for self-study. PTA’s advocacy is for such courses to count towards recognised qualifications as envisaged by the “Career Development Pathways” and the “Professional Development and Continuous Learning” standards of the National Teacher Policy

(2019). Dr. Kamuli has also since confirmed that Bumbobi Primary School, and indeed all schools in Mbale District are implementing Gender Responsive Pedagogy.

In March 2025 Power Teachers Africa’s CEO, Dr.Emmanuel Kamuli, was privileged to be invited to attend the regional Stakeholder Workshop for the identification of teacher professional development initiatives for gender responsive pedagogy.
