Power Teachers Africa is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization that provides cost-effective teacher
motivation focused support to government schools across Africa to address teacher absenteeism, teacher retention, and
improve learning outcomes. We also offer education services to support this work.
We believe that teachers are THE key to addressing the learning crisis across Sub-Saharan Africa,
in which 9 out 10 children aged ten are unable to read a simple text.
(World Bank,2023).
We believe that the elephant in the classroom, teacher absenteeism, is a key reason for the learning crisis.
Motivated and empowered teachers providing high quality education for all children across Africa.
Everything we do is driven by our motto – “Teachers matter. Teacher Motivation Matters. Teachers are THE key
Develop a cadre of Power Teachers who use their power to transform lives through improving their students’ learning.
We have begun work with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) Uganda.
We are currently developing a low-cost administration light mobile phone based incentive and
professional development App, which we will use to incentivise teachers intrinsically and financially:
The technology tools will develop teachers’ capacities to use evidence based teaching practices that improve learning outcomes, as well as motivate them to teach all their classes effectively. The App will include a suite of MoES approved digital teaching courses. Once the App has been developed, refined and finalised, we will use the Power Teachers model to work with the headteachers and all the teachers in selected government schools, as well as district inspectors and in-service teacher educators.
To inform the refining of our model and the development of the App, in February 2025, we begun piloting our Power Teachers for Learning model in a primary school in Eastern Uganda, working with 31 teachers (21 female), 1,777 children (1,020 girls), headteacher, parents, community members, district and MoES officials.
